Discover a different side to Bali in a luxurious resort close to its cultural center, Ubud

Bali is famous for its magnificent beaches, exotic temples and great shopping. But there’s another side to this Asian gem – a spiritual side where the terrain (lush tropical greenery as far as the eye can see) and the culture (arts and crafts and traditions that have stood the test of time) take center stage.

One of the best places to experience this magic is in the center of the island, in the charming little town of Ubud. This is Bali’s cultural hub, home to artists’ workshops, museums and galleries, where one can see the island’s craftsmen creating their masterpieces, and purchase some if you like.

Ubud is a joy to explore, whether you ride around the hillside on a scooter, or take a taxi. And where should you stay? Our choice is Maya Ubud, a magnificent, modern resort set on 10 acres of tropical beauty that offers a variety of activities to keep you creative, centered and relaxed.

Set in a deep river valley amidst lush rice fields and tropical jungle, the resort is completely ‘green’ – it’s been created from natural materials and designed to blend in with the environment. It’s a creative masterpiece, comprising contemporary Balinese-style villas that are elegant and beautiful in their simplicity.

Designed by award-winning architect Budiman Hendropurnomo, the resort offers an enticing combination of traditional and contemporary design. The buildings fit into the landscape as if they were part of it. In true Balinese style, there’s a central walkway connecting the public areas together, while the accommodation is located on either side. The décor is simple, stark and modern. Many pieces were created from recycling everyday objects… weathered old wooden railway sleepers are reincarnated as tabletops, cart wheels are transformed into mirror frames and traditional baskets and fish traps are used as lampshades.
