Situated around 35 km off the coast of Tanzania, Zanzibar is a relatively untouched paradise island, with palm-fringed beaches, azure sea and a strong Arabic influence. Baroque Travel finds out about a luxury resort that recently opened there

The largest coral island off the coast of Africa, Zanzibar is famous for its centuries-old sailing dhows, ornately carved wooden doors and the scent of spices that grow there in profusion. The Island of Spices, as it’s called, offers superb weather all year round. In fact, Zanzibar is a haven for sports enthusiasts, offering excellent snorkelling and diving opportunities; it’s also famous for its deep-sea fishing and diverse water sports.

The luxurious Zuri Zanzibar is the perfect base from which to enjoy all of Zanzibar’s many pleasures. Boasting a 300-meter-long stretch of private beach and nestled in its own magical spice garden full of exotic flowers, the resort is located on the island’s north coast. The sunset views here are legendary and guests enjoy lazing in hammocks or relaxing in their own private guest rooms and watching the orange-pink sun as it plunges into the horizon.

Accommodation is in a choice of luxurious African-style bungalows and villas, each engulfed in lush tropical greenery, with its own private balcony or terrace. Many feature outdoor showers or bathtubs and offer direct access to the beach. Each is separated from the next to offer guests the utmost privacy, and most offer stunning sea views.

The hotel features 3 restaurants, a pool bar, cocktail bar on the beach, infinity swimming pool, stunning traditional spice garden, massage cabanas and a library. Guests enjoy the facilities of a dive center as well as numerous water sports including snorkeling. There is also an outdoor gym and regular yoga lessons are offered.

The entire garden-like 32-acre landscape resembles a traditional African village with thatched roofs, plenty of palm trees and lush greenery. It’s a little world on its own in an exceptional setting, offering an idyllic island vacation. The word ‘Zuri’ means beautiful in Swahili and the entire property reflects this. It’s extremely exclusive and luxurious and offers every possible facility for a luxury barefoot break.
