For the ninth time, Oakmont Country Club will be the location for the 2016 US Open Championship, which will take place from 13 to 19 June. This famous event is part of #PGH200, a celebration of the bicentennial, the 200th anniversary of the city of Pittsburgh. Oakmont is the oldest top-ranked golf course in America, and is located near the city’s northeastern suburbs of Plum and Oakmont. The Pennsylvania Turnpike separates the seven holes (numbers 2 to 8) from the rest of the course.
Jordan Spieth, 2015 winner of the US Open
The US Open itself is equally historic. Since its inception in 1895, this golf championship has afforded countless historic moments, including the latest in 2015, when Jordan Spieth, who, at just 21, became the youngest US Open Championship winner since Bob Jones in 1923. Spieth is also the youngest player to win two major championships – the last time this happened was in 1922.
Tiger Woods
This year’s championship will be just as momentous. Tiger Woods, who has not competed since August 2015, has registered to play in the 2016 US Open. However, there is no guarantee that he will play. He registered to play in 2015 as well, but did not play as he apparently was still not fully recovered from recent back surgery.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
Practice Rounds
Players will have the option of starting practice rounds at the first or 10th tee. Players electing to play a full round generally begin between 7am and 3pm. It is typical for players to be on the golf course or practice areas until at least 7pm.
• Monday, June 13 (Gates open 6am to 7pm)
• Tuesday, June 14 (Gates open 6am to 7pm)
• Wednesday, June 15 (Gates open 6am to 7pm
Championship Rounds 1 and 2
Play is scheduled to begin at 6:45am from both the first and 10th tees. The last groups will begin play at 2:42pm from both the first and 10th tees.
• Thursday, June 16 (first round) (Gates open 6am to conclusion of play)
• Friday, June 17 (second round) (Gates open 6am to conclusion of play)
Championship Rounds 3 and 4
The first starting time will be determined by the number of players who make the cut at the conclusion of the second round (60 lowest scorers and anyone tying for 60th place). Generally, the first pairing begins play from the first tee between 8 to 9am; the last pairing for both days will start from the first tee at approximately 3pm.
• Saturday, June 18 (third round) (Gates open 6am to conclusion of play)
• Sunday, June 19 (fourth round) (Gates open 6am to conclusion of play)
Playoff
If there is a tie for the low score after 72 holes, an 18-hole playoff will be held on Monday, June 20. The playoff will begin at approximately noon. Gates will open at 9:30am.
