Opening on the private island of Desroches in the Seychelles in March 2018, Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Desroches beckons. Baroque Travel finds out all about this new castaway paradise located five degrees south of the equator

The smallest private island in the world, Desroches in the Seychelles archipelago in the Indian Ocean has just undergone a major transformation and reopens on 1 March as a luxurious Four Seasons Resort, the only resort on this captivating coral island.

Offering a true castaway paradise with unrivalled privacy and absolute freedom, the five-star resort is located in the extremely secluded Amirante islands of the Seychelles, just 35 minutes by plane from Seychelles International Airport on the main island of Mahé. Desroches Island itself is a pristine tropical sanctuary lined with 9 miles of soft white sand beaches, and the resort boasts just 71 bungalows, villas, suites and residences, all offering a private swimming pool and access to the beach.

Days are spent exploring the island and the wonderful water with a selection of water sports, from world-class scuba diving in the abundant coral reefs located just offshore to snorkelling, kayaking and fishing. The resort also boasts an excellent spa offering a selection of luxurious, indulgent treatments for wellness and beauty and a state-of-the-art fitness center, open 24 hours a day.

Each day is a new adventure, with so many activities to choose from inland as well as on the water. Explore forest-lined tracks while cycling, enjoy a picnic in a secluded spot, see giant tortoises in their natural habitat in the tortoise sanctuary – there are so many possibilities and the choices are yours to make.

The resort’s main recreation area is called the Castaway Center. Located on Sunset Beach, it’s where all the water sports gear is available, from diving and snorkelling to stand-up paddle boarding, and everything in between. If you’re in the mood, you can even pay volleyball on the beach. For those who love to discover the natural habitat, the Marine Conservation Discovery Center showcases the scale and variety of Desroches Island’s vegetation and marine life. It includes 3D models of a shearwater’s nest as well as a selection of animal skeletons.

Other facilities include a beautiful infinity-edge swimming pool overlooking the sea and the beach, a deck to sunbathe on under a cabana or on a lounge chair, superlative personalized service and excellent dining opportunities in a choice of two restaurants. Facilities include two bars/lounges, free WiFi, air-conditioning and a library.
