Staying at the Grand-Hotel du Cap Ferrat on the French Riviera is a glorious experience in itself. But now you can add another bucket-list event to the mix – a chance to dine in a villa where Jean Cocteau spent many summers! Baroque Travel has all the details.

If you’re staying on the French Riviera at Four Seasons’ unsurpassed Grand-Hotel du Cap Ferret, you’re in for another fabulous treat – the opportunity to visit the villa decorated by artist Jean Cocteau (he visited there often for 13 years from 1949 onwards). He transformed the villa, called Villa Santo Sospir, into a veritable work of art by decorating the floors and walls with mosaics, murals and frescoes that remain to this day.

The villa was famous as the home of socialite Francine Weisweiller, who invited numerous celebrities, writers and artists, including Coco Chanel, Pablo Picasso and actress Marlene Dietrich to visit there. On a visit to the villa, Jean Cocteau fell in love with the place, and subsequently spent many inspiring summers there, decorating the bare walls and ceilings with frescoes inspired by Greek mythology. He also created two mosaic works on the entrance patio as well as a wall tapestry.

A visit to Villa Santo Sospir on the Mediterranean coastline is an opportunity to see original works of art by the master in all their original glory. Visitors will enjoy a personal tour of the rooms to see this whimsical artwork up close and learn all about the many parties that were held there. They will then sit on the terrace and enjoy a Cocteau-inspired aperitif, made of the artist’s favorite liquor La Suze, while watching the sun set over the sea. This is followed by a four-course gourmet meal in the living room, customized by Michelin-star Chef Yoric Tièche and served with a selection of fine wines.

The Grand-Hotel du Cap Ferrat offers guests a range of ‘Extraordinary Experiences’, unsurpassed events that are exclusive to those staying at the hotel. This fine dining experience is one of them. The villa is normally closed to the public so as to protect its valuable assets, so dining here is a unique opportunity for a memorable dinner or romantic get-together. It’s an unsurpassed experience for two for under $5000.

Of course, a stay at the hotel is a memorable experience in its own right. With a guestbook signed by the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Winston Churchill and a breathtaking setting overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, this palatial hotel has epitomized everything that the chic French Riviera stands for, for more than 100 years. A stay at this landmark establishment is the quintessential experience for those wishing to enjoy the French Riviera.
