This Moroccan city has more than its fair share of creativity, with numerous hip hotels and art galleries. Now there’s a new kid on the block – L’Hotel Marrakech, designed by Jasper Conran. Baroque Travel takes a look.

Not only is the brand new little gem, L’Hotel Marrakech, bringing a new dimension to Marrakech’s contemporary medina scene, it’s also just won acclaim; it is listed on CNN’s Gold List for 2019 as one of the best hotels to stay in the world.

This 19th century Riad is privately owned by British designer Jasper Conran. It’s located in the heart of Marrakech, close to the bustling souk and famous Koutoubia Mosque. Originally part of a Caidal palace, the Riad features just 5 spacious suites overlooking a lush courtyard garden and pool. Reminiscent of elegant colonial hotels of the 1930s, this charming mini retreat offers excellent service, comfort and delicious food. Numerous items of furniture boast traditional Moroccan craftsmanship; there are also special pieces from Conran’s own collection and the result is a cosy, home-from-home feel (if you own an elegant, charming and serene home, that is).

The roof terrace is the place to relax with breathtaking views of the city skyline and the Atlas mountains. Enjoy breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea under the pergola. Dinner is served in the hotel dining room, with a cosy fire if it’s cool outside, or with large glass doors open to the courtyard garden in the warmer months.

Everything at this majestic boutique hotel is larger and more colorful than real life, making every experience a sensory adventure, from lazing around the turquoise pool to relaxing in your mostly white, calming bedroom. The main living area is decorated in yellow hues and the cedar-wood bar begs guests to sit down in one of the candy-striped armchairs and sip something delicious.

At this delightful hotel, service is discreet yet very attentive, and dressing for dinner is expected, so that you fit in with the magnificent surrounds. Four-poster beds in the bedrooms are draped with white voile, offering a calm, otherworldly feel to the simple surrounds.

And did we mention the food? Expect freshness and plenty of color, not to mention lots of variety… fresh salads with ingredients that resemble jewels and a fragrant chicken, prune and almond tagine that is legendary.

At this sumptuous, simply elegant establishment, every experience is a movie clip, a memorable moment that will remain forever. Outside is the gipsy wonderland that is Marrakech, with fortune tellers, dancing cobras and acrobats. There’s also the chic alternative – bars, clubs and luxury spas. But inside, in this oasis of calm and greenery, understated elegance is the name of the day.
