Live your dream in France – stay in a magnificent 11th Century turreted castle that has been transformed into a luxury hotel. Baroque Travel has all the details

Domaine des Etangs is an ancient castle in the French countryside in Massignac that was originally built in the 11th Century. Now it has been transformed into an ultra luxurious hotel, offering guests the opportunity of experiencing a dream holiday in a sumptuous palace. Originally the holiday home of French oil billionaire Didier Primat, the hotel is now an 850-acre five star resort with 29 guest rooms that include seven suites and cottages.

This exquisite establishment, which is surrounded by 850 acres of lush Charente countryside, underwent a major refurbishment after its owner passed away in 2008. It is now open to the public as a romantic, superlative resort with every facility for a luxury holiday, from plush accommodation and superlative service to a scenic country setting. Guests enjoy cycling, horse riding, relaxing or exploring the scenic grounds and the beautiful honey-colored stone chateau offers every facility for an extremely comfortable rural getaway. In the hotel itself, there are thermal baths and a 40-seat restaurant offering gourmet French fare prepared with fresh, seasonal ingredients, much of which is grown on the premises. The livestock is also on the property.

Active guests can enjoy a round of golf at the area’s local 18-hole golf course just 20km from the castle, which has been accepted as a member of the group, the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. In true country tradition, roaring fires welcome guests in the cooler months. This cosy atmosphere is a reminder of the golden age of romance, a fairytale period in history brought to life in the castle, with its elegant turrets, sweeping grounds and magical setting.

The extensive restoration project was overseen by the late owner’s daughter, Garance, who worked with famous French landscape designer Camille Muller and architect Isabelle Stanislas. They have meticulously preserved much of the castle’s historic features with the assistance of talented local craftsmen. Much of the original wooden beams and old stone walls remain; these are now decorated with plush furniture and family antiques to create the atmosphere of a regal retreat.

Domaine des Etangs is located just three hours’ drive from pretty Paris, and offers the opportunity to get away from it all and relax in a quiet rural setting.
