Every year, the world’s most talented international golfers get together to compete in one of the highlights of the golfing competitions, the DP World Tour Golf Championships in Dubai. This November, from Thursday 17th to Sunday 20th, the 60 top golfers on the European Tour will head for the Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates to compete in four rounds of stroke-play over four days. This golf course is one of two designed by Greg Norman that are both located on Dubai’s renowned Jumeirah Golf Estates.
This marks the end of the season for the European Tour, and culminates in a US$8 million prize for the winner of the DP World Tour Championship. But that’s not all. There’s also a Bonus Pool for the Race to Dubai, a sum of money which is divided amongst the leading players. This is calculated according to their earnings on the 2016 European Tour International Schedule, which covers more than 45 tournaments in 26 destinations across five continents.
The winner of this, one of the largest championship golf tournaments in the world, not only receives $8 million; the prize includes the Harry Vardon Trophy, first awarded in 1937, as well as a seven-year European Tour Card exemption and the Category 1 Membership of the European Tour Card exemption, which is similar to what winners of the Open Championship, the US Open, the US PGA championship and the Masters Tournament receive.
The Race to Dubai – explained
There are four Final Series tournaments (the Turkish Airlines Open, The WGC- HSBC Champions, The BMW Masters and the DP World Tour Championship). Each of these has an enhanced Race to Dubai points breakdown that totals 8 million points. In other words, each winner of each of these four tournaments receives 1,333,330 points. The Dubai Bonus Pool is divided amongst the leading 15 Players in The Race to Dubai Rankings; this is calculated at the end of the DP World Tour Championship Dubai each year.
