The newest addition to the volcanic Greek island of Santorini is the exquisite Istoria Hotel, a 12-suite luxury retreat for sophisticated travelers. Baroque Travel has all the details.
Located where the black volcanic sand of Perivolos Beach meets the azure Aegean Sea, the Istoria Hotel adds a unique architectural narrative to this iconic island. Whereas Santorini town and Oia are filled with white-washed buildings that cling to the cliff, this hotel offers a slightly different story because of its location. The design is contemporary and stripped down to incorporate its cliff-side landscape. Spaces are simple, and the island’s distinctive volcanic stone and colored plaster were used to create the building. Add some exquisite pieces of wooden furniture and hand-crafted textiles and you have an unsurpassed, stylish hotel offering.
The hotel is located on the 2-mile long Perivolos beach on the southern end of Santorini. Its long stretches of shoreland make it ideal for strolling, enjoying something to eat at a choice of restaurants or participating in various water sports activities including wind surfing and scuba diving. Guests can catch the sun on loungers laid out on the black sand beach or enjoy sunbathing by the large infinity swimming pool, while enjoying signature cocktails and delicious snacks.
The hotel’s Mr. E Restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner. It is headed by Executive Chef Alexandros Tsiotinis, who made his name in Michelin-starred restaurants such as Noma in Copenhagen and Le Bristol in Paris. His menu features a culinary wonderland influenced by the island’s traditions and its abundance of fresh seafood. Dishes are washed down with sublime Santorini wines.
Most of the 12 luxurious suites offer private outdoor hot tubs or pools, and all have a terrace. Living spaces are on different levels and the floors are covered in local mosaic and forged cement. What makes the hotel so unique is that the original elements of the building are preserved in the interiors of each of the suites, including old wooden roofs and stone columns, creating an extraordinary blend of contemporary elements and original features.
The Asian spa on the premises offers a range of refreshing treatments, including wraps, massages and facials, in the two treatment rooms.
